Scale deposits in water systems  are often combinations or mixtures of inorganic and organic materials. The causes of scale and other fouling deposits are many, varied and extremely complex. The time it takes for an initial scale layer to form and its subsequent rate of growth are determined by the interaction of several rate processes such as concentration, nucleation, diffusion, chemical reaction, temperature, pH and molecular arrangement of the scale crystal lattices.

Polyacrylic Acid is an effective scale control polymer used in cooling tower applications.
